Rio Grande do Sul has 2,700 furniture companies, which corresponds to 13.3% of the enterprises in the sector in Brazil. They account for 18.4% of the total furniture manufactured in the country and 31.1% of the exports1. This confers to the State a leading position in the national production.
In 2015, the furniture companies of Rio Grande do Sul produced approximately 85.3 million pieces, obtained R$ 6.73 billion in revenues and exported more than U$ 183 million.]

Wood
The planted forests of Rio Grande do Sul are distributed in six areas, surrounded by the industries that promote the development of their regions. The forest-based production chain generates goods and services to the community, providing significant economic, social and environmental contributions.
The prevalent composition of the forests in Rio Grande do Sul is as follows: pine in Serra Gaúcha; black wattle and eucalyptus in the Central and Southeastern regions of the State, pine in the Middle Coast region; pine and eucalyptus in the Northern Region; eucalyptus and black wattle in the Southern and Campanha regions, and eucalyptus and pine in the Western Border region.
Figures of the wood segment:
- Contribution to the economy: in 2014, the forest-based sector (wood, furniture, pulp and pulp) accounted for 7% of job generation, 3% of tax collection and 2% of the sales value of forest-based products exported from Rio Grande do Sul.
- Approximately 2,300 companies integrate the forest-based production chain in Rio Grande do Sul, with emphasis to the wood furniture segment, which concentrates 95% of these companies in centers such as Bento Gonçalves and Lagoa Vermelha. The main companies of wood and cellulose panels are located in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre.
Sector Opportunities in Rio Grande do Sul
- Joint operations between the furniture manufacturers of Rio Grande do Sul and international distribution networks (retail networks), aiming for a better access to foreign markets. For example, it would be possible to create exclusive lines of furniture for large global distribution networks, taking advantage of the expertise of Rio Grande do Sul furniture producers, the well known quality of its products, and using this to differentiate the products worldwide.
- Approach with famous international designers, allowing the exchange of our own design style with other preferences and trends from the rest of the world. The creation of exclusive lines, in partnership with famous designers, could boost the exposure and give new markets to our manufacturers and, in turn, give international designers and their distribution networks unique products with the quality that characterizes our local products.
